The festivals ran for 15 years (1963-1980, with gaps in 1970, 1976, and 1979), transforming from intimate experimental music concerts into massive public spectacles that helped establish performance art, video art, Fluxus, and happenings as legitimate art forms in the United States. Title A name given to the resource 6th Annual NY Festival of the Avant Garde Description An account of the resource Poster for the Sixth Annual New York Avant Garde Festival: A Parade, organized and directed by Charlotte Moorman in 1968. The event took the form of a live procession through New York City streets, merging avant-garde performance, music, and public art. Participants included Nam June Paik, John Cage, Phillip Glass, Ay-o, Jacques Delacroix, Robert Watts, Robert Ruman, Bill Carruthers, George Brecht, and numerous others. The poster is printed in red with a map of Manhattan as background, overlaid with the event title in lowercase typography and facsimile signatures of participating artists arranged in vertical columns.
