The FLUXbox is a themed multiple/object box produced in 2012 as part of "Fluxus 50: 1962-2012 Fluxus in Wiesbaden," a citywide jubilee festival marking the 50th anniversary of the first Fluxus performances, which took place at the Museum Wiesbaden in September 1962 during the "Fluxus Internationale Festspiele Neuester Musik." Dudding the inaugural festival, George Maciunas, Dick Higgins, Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell, Ben Patterson, Emmett Williams and others took part in Philip Corner's Piano Activities, culminating in the destruction of a grand piano. This event is retrospectively regarded as the founding moment of the international Fluxus movement, making Wiesbaden its acknowledged birthplace.
The 2012 anniversary festival was organized under the city's Kulturdezernentin (Head of Cultural Affairs) Rose-Lore Scholz, in cooperation with the Kulturamt Wiesbaden, and received major funding from the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Federal Cultural Foundation) and the kulturfonds frankfurtrheinmain. It ran across roughly fifteen venues in the city over the course of the year, coordinated among the participating institutions printed on the box itself: Caligari Filmbühne, Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Künstlerverein Walkmühle, KunstHaus Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bellevue-Saal, Literaturhaus Villa Clementine, Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Museum Wiesbaden, Musikbibliothek/Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Schloss Freudenberg, Stadtmuseum Wiesbaden, Wi&You, and the Amt für Soziale Arbeit.
The festival's centerpiece exhibition, Fluxus at 50 (Museum Wiesbaden, 2 June - 23 September 2012), was developed together with Fluxus founding member and long-time Wiesbaden resident Ben Patterson, and presented Fluxus scores, objects, and documentation from the 1962 performers, both displayed and re-performed. In front of the museum stood a Fluxus Pavilion also designed by Patterson, which served as a gathering space, café, and "mediathek" for visitors. The pavilion included a blue shipping container housing a curated Fluxus book-shop run by Amsterdam-based dealer, publisher, and curator Harry Ruhe (founder of Amsterdam's Galerie A), selling postcards, mail art, artists' books, and small Fluxus multiples.
The FLUXbox itself belongs to this festival's programme of Fluxus-style multiples: continuing the historical Fluxkit tradition established by Maciunas in the 1960s, which included assemblages of small, tactile, everyday-object-based works by multiple artists gathered in a single container. The 2012 FLUXbox gathers contributions or materials tied to the participating institutions above, produced and distributed as an official festival item.
