Description
This video reports on Premier LeSage's electoral victory in Quebec in 1960. Prior to this point, the province had been under the government of Premier Maurice Duplessis, and the Catholic church was deeply rooted in both the cultural and political sphere. After Duplessis's death, the Liberal party ran on a platform of change. LeSage's victory was characterised by a political turn from Catholicism to secularism, which had been brewing socially before the election. The Quiet Revolution had begun. The Catholic church began to lose its power. Nationalism in the province became closely linked to secularism. Today, secularism remains deeply rooted in Quebec.
