Development of Biodegradable Plastic

Guillet joined the Department of Chemistry of the University of Toronto in 1963 as an associate professor.  In 1971 his work on photochemistry resulted in a plastic bag that would decompose when exposed to direct sunlight.  Unable to interest Canadian industry he set up three high-tech companies based on inventions and technology originating at the University: EcoPlastics Limited, which manufactured degradable plastics; Medipro Sciences Limited, which developed 'artificial skin' for burn victims and Solarchem Corporation, which developed proprietary methods for making pharmaceuticals and speciality chemicals using sunlight as the primary energy source.
