Herbert Edward Terrick Haultain, 1869-1961
A member of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, Haultain graduated in Civil Engineering from what was the precursor of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in 1889. He returned as Professor of Mining Engineering in 1908 and went on to make significant improvements in the areas of education and invention. His inventions include the Superpanner, the electric mine hoist and the Infrasizer. He also is responsible for the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer which dates back to 1922. Haultain requested Rudyard Kipling compose a fitting poem as part of a ceremony which is why the ceremony is also known as the Kiping Ritual.
