Title
Rubbing2023.27 - Sir Thomas de Topcliffe and his wife Mabel
Description
Inscription: There is a Latin Inscription that is upside down on the bottom (a full marginal inscription should be included but is missing in our rubbing).
Visible Latin Inscription: "propicietur Deus Hic iacet venerabilis"
English Translation: "may God have mercy Here lies the venerable".
(Translated by Bard Swallow.)
Notes on the Parchment: "Thos. D. Topcliffe 1391"
Description of Rubbing: He is on the left and she is on the right they are both facing forward. They are both wearing tunics and mantles and have their hands in prayer.
His tunic has a decorative edge on the bottom and is shorter. He is also wearing bracelets.
Her tunic is plain and her sleeves widen at the hands with a row of buttons.
He has a lion at his feet facing right and she has a dog with a collar with bells on facing left at her feet.
They both have cushions behind their heads being held by angels with outstretched wings at the top.
The background is filled with flowing patterns and they are surrounded by tabernacle work with angels playing musical instruments.
There is a border around them with old English script but we only see the bottom one. This is not of the full brass.
