Rubbing2023.4 - William Gardiner and his two wives Elizabeth (Grove) and Cecily
Title
Rubbing2023.4 - William Gardiner and his two wives Elizabeth (Grove) and Cecily
Description
Notes on the Parchment: "Chalfont St. Giles Civilian & 2 wives 1540"
Description of Rubbing: The image is of Elizabeth, William, Cecily.
The civilian has his hands praying, and he is looking straight forward. His hair is cut into a bob reaching his chin. He is standing on a grass mound. He is wearing a robe or cape that lands at his ankles showing his feet and sandals. His robes have a center line with what looks to be fur and large sleeves.
The wife on the left is facing the right and the wife on the right is facing left. It looks as if they are meant to be identical but they are just slightly off.
They both have praying hands. They have a large sleeved dress on with square neck designs. They also have a double beaded belt down the front and have angular wimples on. Their dresses have folds and pleats and no feet are shown.
All three are very detailed and heavily shaded.
