Canadian Dental Periodicals

Canadian dental literature focuses on knowledge sharing of dental research, dental education, patient education, practice management, practice guidelines, and more. The first journal was privately funded by dentists in Ontario and Quebec. Today, Journal of the Canadian Dental Association (J.C.D.A.) and CDA Essentials, the publications of the Canadian Dental Association, break traditional publishing methods and include non-print media as well as articles to share evidence for clinical decision-making. We provide here a selection of national and provincial dental publications.

The history of dental literature in Canada reflects the profession’s development away from the image of barber surgeons and into a modern scientific discipline. This section will focus on Ontarian and national dental periodicals in Canada from 1868 to present. This is not a complete list of dental periodicals; it focuses on what our library has in the collection in print and whatever we could find online by visiting provincial websites. In addition, this list focuses on dentists and does not provide an inclusive list of publications distributed to all oral health professionals in Canada. For examples, it does not cover publications from denturists, dental assistants, dental technicians, dental legal professionals or dental office managers.
