As we celebrate 150 years of the dental school at the University of Toronto, we reflect on the development of dental education over the years and commemorate all those who came before us, dedicating countless hours to improving clinical and research training. At the turn of the 20th century, Canada looked to both the United States and the United Kingdom for educational reform. Two fundamental reports from the U.S. helped shape Canadian dental programs: the Flexner Report (1910) (1) and the Gies Report (1926) (2). The establishment of the Toronto Dental School in 1875 was the beginning of dental education in Canada. In the 1958-1959 yearbook (3), there are brief sketches of each dental program written by the Department Heads at the time, as well as a History of the Faculty written by former Dean R.G. Ellis. We are fortunate to have these histories preserved in the words of oral health leaders of the time, and we have digitized and added them here for all to enjoy.
