These two messages from the Canadian Ambassador to the United States offer the preliminary summary of further remarks made by Dulles concerning the New Look. As well as the explanations of the New Look and the emphasis on consultation with US allies, the ambassador picks up one of the many issues complicating US-Canadian relations: McCarthyism. “[Dulles] refuses, rather lamely we believe, to be drawn into a discussion on the effect of McCarthyism on United States relations with its allies,” the ambassador notes.
