Types of Dentures
In the 19th century, there were two primary types of dentures: partial and full. (9) Though they are not the focus of this exhibition, dentists used a “pivot tooth” to replace a singular lost tooth. In these cases, a wood or metal substance was carved and attached to a pin or screw (the “pivot”) before being fastened to the mouth. Partial and full dentures saw usage in more severe cases of teeth loss/decay, when many critical teeth were either lost or unsalvageable due to high levels of deterioration. (8)
