Dr. A.D.A. Mason

Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason was born on a farm in L’Amoureux in the Township of Scarboro, on January 19th, 1878 ("Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.). He was the youngest of ten children ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d.). He spent the first two years of his dental education at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Canada starting in 1899, and than attended the Chicago College of Dental Surgeons, where he graduated in 1901 ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d.). He then returned to Toronto to complete his DDS at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and graduated with the class of 1902 ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d.).

He began practicing in Toronto in 1902, and was elected to the Presidency of the Toronto Dental Society ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d., & "Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.). Around 1912, Dr. Mason was appointed to the staff of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and began instructing Operative Dentistry. He stayed on at the school when it became the Faculty of Dentistry in 1925 ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d., & "Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.). He eventually became Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry in 1936 and retired in 1947 ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d., & "Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.). He was also the elected representative from the Faculty on the Board of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons, and became its president from 1922-1924 ("Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.). Additionally, he was the “first dentist associated with the Toronto General Hospital to deal with fractures of the jaws” ("Arnold Denbow Alfred Mason, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," n.d.).

The unpublished biographical information at the Dentistry Library depicts Dr. Mason as an enthusiastic person with many hobbies including the arts, and was known to be an amateur moving picture photographer and collector of Canadian paintings ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d.). Dr. Mason was also known to be an avid golf player ("Dean Arnold D. Mason," n.d.). He was appointed Dentistry Librarian from 1912-1913 during which time, the shelving capacity was reached and he ordered new bookcases.
