Dr. D.W. Gullett

Although Dr. Donald Werden Gullett was not an officially appointed librarian at the Dentistry Library, his dedication to the library and its collection is still recognized today. Dr. Gullett was born in Wellman's, Ontario, on September 18th, 1898 ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). He received his early education in Syracuse, New York, and than attended Peterborough Normal School between the years 1916-1917 ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). He received his formal dental education at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and graduated in 1923 ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). After graduating, he went on to establish a dental practice in Picton, Ontario for seventeen years until 1946, and at the same time, he was also the Chairman of the Picton School Board, Literary Board and Hospital Board ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). 

Dr. Gullett held many prestigious titles during his lifetime, one of which was being appointed the Associate in Dental Praxis at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 1948 ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). He was also the District Representative of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in 1936, and was elected a member of the Board in the same year ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). In 1940, he was appointed as the Registrar-Secretary of the Royal College of Dental surgeons, and in 1943 he was the Secretary of the Canadian Dental Association ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). He was also made a Fellow of the American College of Dentists in 1943 ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954).

Dr. Gullett also held many honorary titles for his accomplishments in dentistry and dental education. In 1949, the British Dental Association conferred an Honorary Life membership on him at Scarborough, England ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). He was also an Honorary member of the American Dental Association, and in other dental associations as well ("Donald Werden Gullett, D.D.S., F.A.C.D.," 1954). 

In addition to all of these accomplishments, Gullett was also an avid researcher and historian. He was responsible for the creation of the notable work, A history of dentistry in Canada, which is often referred to as the "Canadian dental history bible." Gullett also contributed in teaching an extensive course on the history of dentistry. He was also known and recognized for his involvement at the Dentistry Library, and was part of the library committee for many years.
