Dr. E.W. Paul

Edgar Watson Paul was born on November 26th, 1878 in Feversham, Ontario ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.). He attended Feversham Public School and Collingwood Collegiate Institute ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.). He completed his D.D.S. from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in 1901 ("Edgar Watson Paul, D.D.S.," n.d.). He was an instructor of anesthesia at the School of Dentistry of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons from 1908-1909, and the instructor of anesthesia and exodontia from 1909-1914 ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.). He continued teaching at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons as a lecturer and eventually became professor of Dental Surgery and Anesthesia at the Faculty of Dentistry from 1925-1948 ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.).

Dr. Paul held esteemed titles in other notable professional areas as well. He was also a member of the Board of Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario from 1941-1949 ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.). He was the archivist of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) from 1937-1944 ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.), and then became the president of the ODA in 1936 ("Edgar Watson Paul, D.D.S.," n.d.). He was also a certified specialist in dental oral surgery in 1944, and the president of the Dentists’ Legal Protective Association starting in 1944 ("Dr. Edgar Watson Paul," n.d.).

During his time as appointed librarian from 1937 to 1948, Dr. Paul oversaw donations to the library and management of the H.R. Abbott and Mrs. Dorinda E. Tully estates to purchase new books and periodicals. During the WWII years, he reported a decrease in circulation as the students were away serving and training. To increase access to books for those students who were involved in militia, he set up a Travelling Library, a special arrangement with the Post Office, where library books could be mailed at reduced costs, to meet the needs of the Canadian Army Dental Corps (RCDS, 1941). The mailed books increased from 135 in 1939 to 189 by 1940. He noted that the library was at capacity for space and that two separate rooms, one for reading and one for stacks, would be ideal to reduce noise (RCDS, 1941). He also requested a second full-time clerk to be hired by September 1941 in order to keep up with circulation and reference demands (RCDS, 1941). By the end of his appointment as librarian in 1948 the collection had grown significantly and the library hours were extended (RCDS, 1948).
