In 1932, James G. Endicott was dispatched with his fellow missionaries to carry out proselytizing activities and teach English to Communists interned at a political prison in Chengdu, known as a “repentance camp” (反省院 fanxing yuan). This photograph was taken to commemorate a musical concert prepared by the prisoners for the children of their missionary teachers.

The missionaries in the third row are, from the left, Jim Endicott, A. Ryerson, E. McCurdy, Mary Austin, H. Veals, Laura Riddell, H. Irish, and G Rackham; prison wardens, Buddhist and YMCA teachers in back row; two Endicott boys, Stephen and Norman Endicott, are front left.
