James G. Endicott’s story marked his passage from missionary to educator, from cultural mediator to political advisor, and, ultimately, his emergence as a champion of peace on the global stage and subject of controversy at home. It offers a vantage point from which to observe one man’s vision for a better world, in Canada his ancestral homeland, and in China, the land of his birth.
The Endicott family’s engagement with China spans multiple generations, beginning with Jim’s parents, who served as missionaries in West China. This deeply rooted engagement continued with two of Jim and Mary’s children, Stephen and Norman, who pursued careers connected to China, and extended to subsequent generations, many of whom traveled to China to explore the family’s legacy. The Endicott family story provides a compelling lens to examine the intersection of religion, education, politics, and cultural exchange in the 20th century. It challenges us to reflect on the personal cost of conviction and to consider how individual lives can become intwined with broader historical forces, shaping, and being shaped by the events of their time.
In 1982, the United Church extended a formal apology to Jim for having denounced him three decades earlier. A year later he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by York University and given a medal of distinction by the city of Toronto in recognition of his efforts to further the cause of peace.
