Following James G. Endicott’s public accusation that the US had experimented with germ warfare, the Canadian government considered charging him with treason on the grounds that he had undermined the country’s participation in the Korean War. The peace executive decided to meet the gathering storm by hosting a mass rally at Maple Leaf Gardens on 11 May 1952. Facing his opponents and supporters alike, James gave a lengthy address that was followed by a standing ovation. Before he took the podium, James was introduced by his now eighty-seven-year-old father and the onetime moderator of the United Church. An excerpt of his father’s impassioned speech can be heard here.
