The Peace Movement Banner
This banner commemorates participation in a demonstration held in Japan in 1954 as part of the anti-nuclear movement in there. The movement opposed the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons in the wake of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. In August 1958, Jim and Mary attended the annual peace festival in Kamakura, a seaside town near Tokyo, where they were greeted by enthusiastic crowds numbering up to 30,000 people who had travelled across the country on foot or by bicycle to participate in the demonstration.
The banner reads: “The singing voice is the power of peace,” and “the atomic bomb is unforgivable.” The “singing voice” evokes solidarity within the anti-nuclear movement and is also the name of the organization that created the banner.
