Born in Guangdong province and a graduate of the Municipal Guangzhou Art School, Li was a leading figure in the New Woodcut Movement. The movement employed woodblock technology to denounce imperialist aggression and depict the suffering of China’s working poor. First used by the League of Left-Wing Writers and other cultural reformers in the 1930s, these techniques were soon adopted by the Communists to produce cheap and effective agitational propaganda under conditions of material scarcity.
